Cherry pickin

Oh I do love a pretty cherry print fabric. I love red, and cherries create such a cute vintage look. This dress was made using the same pattern as the last. I changed the sleeve to the plain short version, rather than puff, and used red piping instead of ric rac around the neck. I used a black with white polka dot for the sleeve lining, and inside the pockets. I've loved wearing this dress, and had lots of compliments on it.

I did a bit of fabric shopping today, more florals, and some summery gingham. I'm dreading having to think about winter clothes soon. Not that we've had much of a summer here in New Zealand yet. I've still been wearing a cardigan with my dresses most days! In saying that I have been dreaming of making myself a woollen coat with a fur collar๐Ÿ’•

One can never have too many dresses!

So I purchased this cute fabric on a recent trip to Spotlight.

It was on their sale table for $4/m!!! Now if there's one thing I like more than a cute new dress, it's a bargain ๐Ÿ˜„ So all up with interfacing, contrast fabric, ric rac, braid etc, I guess this dress probably
cost around $25-$30. I made it using a pattern from Gertie's Ultimate Dress Book by Gretchen Hirsch, which I cannot recommend highly enough. It's the ultimate go to book for anyone who love sewing, and pinup style. So here's the one in the book..

I love the ric rac set into the neckline. So the main change that I made is cutting the skirt fuller, it was cut in 4 sections as the fabric was only 115cm wide. I also added a shaped contrast band to the hem, with horse hair braid to give the skirt more oomph!

Then appliqued the shaped hem down...

And here's the finished dress

Hey folks, I'm Miss Daisy. Welcome to my blog!

I have my own business here in New Zealand, and although my job does involve sewing, my real passion is pinup and vintage fashion. I just love the elegance, and simplicity of 50s/60s design. I do dress like this every day, and yes, it does take more time and effort than throwing on a pair of track pants and a t shirt, but it makes me feel so good that it's totally worth the extra effort. I love when older ladies smile and tell me "My mother made me a dress just like that when I was young!" You can see in their faces how they felt when they wore that dress, and it makes us both grin from ear to ear. Or when wee girls catch sight of a flounced petticoat, and look up in amazement, never having met an adult that loves a good twirling skirt ๐Ÿ˜„
